TOYS and games will be handed out to Hemsworth school children thanks to a generous supermarket donation.

A surprise £200 cheque was awarded to St Helens School from Asda as part of their community life group scheme.

Samantha Corcoran, chair of the school’s PTA and parent governor, approached the supermarket chain after reading an advert about the scheme in the Express.

She said: “The PTA group just wanted to see what they could offer us. We were happy with anything really.

“It was a lovely surprise, we were really pleased. We didn’t expect the money at all.”

The awarded funds are set to be spent on outdoor play equipment for the school, which pupils will help decide on this week.

Ms Corcoran said: “Things get pinched and damaged so a lot of things just need replacing.

“We would like some games painted on the floor, like snakes and ladders and hop scotch, so we’ll try to look into that as well.”

Asda’s community life group scheme, which has been running since March this year, works closely with local communities to financially serve deserving organisations, which are nominated by ‘community life champion’ Asda employees.

Angela Spencer, community life champion at Asda’s Yorkshire XDC, nominated St Helens School, which then had a one in three chance of gaining the most votes from workers at Asda’s South Elmsall depot centre.

Mrs Spencer said: “Most of our colleagues are from round this area, and they chose St Helens school to receive the money.

“When they won the £200 we were hoping that would help the children get apparatus for the playground.

“You just like to support your local community and your community life.”
