Support for armed forces

Soldiers are set to be honoured with a flag hoisting and bugle playing at a ceremony for National Armed Forces Day.

The Hemsworth Town Council event will recognise the sacrifice made by our forces at the Hemsworth War Memorial.

It will follow an information day by Wakefield Council to offer support to soldiers and veterans in the district, as part of the pledge to provide support in the official Covenant signed in November.

Advice on a range of topics will be on offer from teams across the Council, including Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), Groundwork, Wakefield College and Job Centre Plus. The British Legion, The Rifles and Soldier Sailors Airmen Families Association will also be there.

Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council said: “We are committed to showing our recognition of the service and sacrifice shown by our residents who have served as members of the Armed Forces in the past or are serving now. It is vital that people know that this support exists and is available to them.”

The information day is being held from 12 noon until 6pm on Thursday, May 24, at the TA centre on George Street, Wakefield.

And the Hemsworth ceremony will take place at 10.15am on Monday, June 25, at the community centre and war memorial on Bullenshaw Road. People will be invited inside the community centre for refreshments after the service.
