Superheroes drop in to Fitzwilliam
Pupils at Fitzwilliam primary school in fancy dress for Book Day. Andrew Cooke
SPIDERMAN, Buzz Lightyear and Harry Potter were all in Fitzwilliam this week but they weren’t there to film Hollywood’s latest blockbuster.
Fitzwilliam Primary School children dressed up as their favourite characters to celebrate Book Day.
It was organised by the children themselves to raise funds to buy new books for their classrooms.
And lots of famous characters were in attendance.
Headteacher, Sue Harrison, said: “The day was a great success and just one of a number of projects planned to raise reading book funds.
“It’s really important to get the children reading and we are also trying to make reading a cool thing to do.”
Staff at the school also joined in and wore fancy dress last Friday. Barnsley Football Club players have also signed up to help and have visited the school once a week to read with the pupils.
Mrs Harrison added: “What we thought was if the children help to raise money for their own books then it will mean more to them.
“And we just want to create more opportunities for them to read and engage with books.”
