Students encouraged to try apprenticeships
Young apprentices from Wakefield District Housing visited Minsthorpe Community College to give students advice on apprenticeships.
Office modern apprentices Beth Lewis and Whitney Hatto and apprentice plumbers James Bostock and Tyler Porter spoke to students about the scheme.
Mr Porter, 18, of Grimethorpe, is in his third year pluming apprenticeship.
He said: “I was really pleased when I got my apprenticeship, as there aren’t many opportunities like this for young people in the area.
“I knew I wanted to work in the trade. I was working in Hemsworth and kept seeing WDH vans driving around which inspired me to have a look at the vacancies they had on offer.
“Since then, my work has been really varied and exciting.
“I’ve worked on a new build site in Ryhill and even started working on boiler installations with the gas services team.”
There are five trade apprenticeship currently available with WDH - two electrical, one joinery, one roofing and one bricklaying.
Mr Porter added: “Nothing gets you experience like going out and being hands on.”
The deadline for applying for an apprenticeship is March 25 via www.wdh.co.uk.
