Stalk and slash

PICTURE the crime scene – a screaming blonde girl, a rotting corpse with maggots crawling out of its eyes and the silent culprit, steathly climbing the stairs towards her.

It's a scene straight from a stalk and slash film – but actually it's exactly what happened at my house this weekend.

On the rainy Saturday morning, after padding about and pretending to tidy up, I smelled a curious odour upstairs.

I couldn't work out where it was coming from, so called my boyfriend who couldn't understand it either. He got down on all fours and poked about.

Pulling out the dead mouse was horrendous enough. But when he attempted to move it onto a bit of cardboard and a whole host of maggots swarmed out, I almost fainted. Then I proceeded to gag repeatedly at the stench and forced my poor bloke to deal with it. Meanwhile our cat slinked up the stairs, saw the commotion, turned her nose up in disgust and wandered off.

My heroic boyfriend hoovered up the squirming creatures, and flung the mouse by its tail into the fields. Goodbye maggots.

But afterwards I became nostalgic. When I was six, I used to have a pet maggot called Mickey. One day I took him for a walk on the palm of my hand when the neighbourhood bully ran up, smacked the back of my hand so Mickey flew into the air, landed on the floor then stamped on him.

I was really upset, especially as I wasn't allowed a real pet, so with these sad memories, I decided not be too harsh on our cat, as I'm lucky enough to have a pet in the first place.

So when we got back, I went in all smiles, ready to thank her for what was probably intended as a present.

Then I saw another dead mouse on the kitchen floor. Tortoiseshell cat – free to a good home.
