A FOOTBALL club has renamed its stadium as a “fitting tribute” to the dedicated secretary who died at the club he helped to found.

Mark Crapper, of Newstead Terrace, Fitzwilliam, died in April aged 47 at the Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare FC clubhouse.

Mr Crapper helped found the club back in 1981 when he reformed the team out of the disbanded Hemsworth Colliery Football Club.

The avid Leeds United supporter took on the role of secretary and had worked tirelessly for the club ever since.

So his former co-workers at the club have renamed their grounds with his initials as the MDC Stadium, in his memory.

Kevin Conway, club chairman, said: “We have officially renamed it as the MDC Stadium, in lasting memory of Mark.

“It’s a very fitting tribute - he helped to get the club up and running again when it closed in 1981.

“He was a great guy, he was my right hand man - he got involved in everything.”

The club also paid tribute to Mr Crapper last month at a memorial match where a minutes silence was held to remember him.

The players also warmed up in shirts bearing the name MD Crapper 4, and his family laid flowers on the centre circle alongside a shirt printed with Mr Crapper’s name.

He leaves behind his wife, Jane, and three sons.

In a statement after Mr Crapper’s death, the club said: “Mark had a vision to get this small village football club into the highest standard that was possible and, after 31 years as club secretary, he has no doubt made lots of friends throughout the local football fraternity.

“Mark will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him - one thing that will not be missed is the legacy that he leaves behind.”
