South Elmsall gravestone mystery
A SOUTH Elmsall couple had a shock when they dug up a headstone in their garden.
Roy and Carole Moss, of Ash Grove, were digging up flagstones under their dog's kennel when they came across the stone, which bears the
inscription: 'In loving memory of a dear daughter and sister,
Mollie Cooke, died July 1964, aged 22 years'.
The couple then got in touch with the manufacturer of the stone, Oxleys, and discovered it had once been in place in Hemsworth Cemetery.
A visit to the grave made the whole situation even more mysterious as there is already a headstone there – but this one also bears the name of
Mollie Cooke's five-week-old baby, who died two years before she did.
And in a bizarre twist to the story, the kennel that the headstone was under belongs to the couple's dog – also called Molly.
Mrs Moss, 48, said: "When my daughter told me her dad had found a headstone under Molly's kennel and it was for a girl who was also called Mollie I thought it was a joke.
"We would like to return the stone to its rightful owner. Mollie must be related to someone and it doesn't seem fair or right to do anything else with it."
