Soprano sings to save lives at charity event
AN OPERA singer will be making waves in South Kirkby this weekend to help raise cash for a lifeboat charity.
Soprano Rebecca Newman will perform at The Grove on Sunday to help spread the word about the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
Part of the proceeds from her UK tour, Coast to Coast, and all profits from her new single will be donated to the charity.
Valerie Chapman is just one of three remaining members from the South Kirkby guild of the RNLI.
She said: “We are so thrilled to be holding this event and think it will be a night to remember.”
As well as a performance from the soprano, there will also be souvenirs on offer - with some of the proceeds also being donated to the charity.
Ms Newman become a full-time professional singer after graduating from the University of York in 2007.
She has performed at venues across the country, including The Royal Albert Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Headingley Stadium with crowds of up to 20,000.
She said: “Not only do I hope my tour raises money for the charity, but I also want to create awareness about their fantastic work.
“The crew are volunteers and bravely put their lives on the line to rescue people who get into difficulties around our coastlines.
“I am also using the tour and my own profile as a singer to raise awareness of the charity with a tour video diary, to get more people donating to the RNLI and, hopefully, volunteering to help.”
The RNLI provides on call 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service, and a seasonal lifeguard service.
It costs around £385,000 a day to run the RNLI, all of which is donated by the public.
On average 22 people are rescued a day by the RNLI.
The show starts at 7pm and tickets cost £11, or £10 concessions.
They can be purchased by calling Mrs Chapman on 01977 649899 or 07720 102 029.
