A JEWEL in the crown of local business has celebrated more than 30 years of success.

Family run business B.E.L. Jewellers opened its doors many years ago after its owner, David Attewell, decided to follow his dream and run his own store.

Mr Attewell, 57, and wife, Irene, 55, set up their first shop on Bank Street, Hemsworth in 1982.

That was quickly followed with another shop on Barnsley Road, South Elmsall.

As well as selling new and second-hand jewellery the shops also offer a selection of gifts and clocks.

Mrs Attewell said it has been wonderful working in the towns for so many years.

She said: “During the past 30 years we have built up a lot of loyal customers and they have become good friends.

“And now children of our first customers are coming to us, which is really nice as it shows we have been providing a service people want and are happy with.”

The recession has meant sales had reduced over the past 18 months.

And at times the couple have found it difficult to compete with larger chain stores.

But they said their personal and friendly service had helped them stand the test of time.

She thanked managers at the Hemsworth branch, Alan Aitchison and Alison Dobson, and the rest of their staff, for all of their hard work and help.

And Mrs Attewell hopes she and her husband will continue to serve their customers for many years to come

She said: “At some point retirement has got to beckon, but at the moment we are happy and enjoying what we are doing.”

The South Elmsall store had also previously been a jewellers, called Brummit, which was run by Clive Brummit and had been there for fifteen years before the Attewell’s opened their shop.
