A FORMER carer has set up her own business thanks to a scheme designed to boost the district’s economy.

Clare Hale, of Cudworth, has started her own handbags, jewellery and accessories stall, Bags and Bangles, at South Elmsall Market.

Ms Hale, 42, of Barnsley Road was working as a carer but decided to take the leap and become her own boss.

She said: “This is something I have always wanted to do and the opportunity arose with this scheme.

“I wanted to work for myself instead of someone else. The start-up scheme was one of the major reasons I decided to go for it.”

The Express reported last week how Juanita Austin, of South Kirkby, also took advantage of the Wakefield Council run scheme to help kick-start her business Just Your Style.

And now Ms Hale, who only opened her stall last week, has taken advantage of the scheme too - and is already seeing success.

She said: “We had a very good first two days trading, better than we expected.

“We are really pleased to be in South Elmsall Market.”

The stallholder is currently enjoying four weeks free trading, which will be followed by four weeks half-price, and then four weeks with a 25 per cent discount.

She will also get free advice from council bosses.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member with responsibility for markets, said: “Clare is the seventh trader to take advantage of the council’s business start-up scheme at South Elmsall Market.

“It is really good news for customers as it is transforming the market, offering a lot more choice and complimenting the goods already on offer from our popular established traders.”

The scheme has been designed to help boost the district’s economy and to get people working.

Coun Dagger added: “We are offering a generous free and discounted trading period which takes the pressure off new businesses during a time when they are buying stock and building their customer base.”

The scheme is open to new and existing market stallholders, aged 16 or above, that would like help in setting up their business.
