GIRLS who studied at a Hemsworth school are now £500 richer thanks to a special fund.

Jemma Turner and Rebecca Griffin were awarded the cash thanks to the Archbishop Holgate Trust.

The teenagers, who attended Hemsworth Art and Community College, applied for the grant – money left in the Archbishop’s will towards local educational services – after a local vicar visited their Religious Studies class with the suggestion.

The girls, who both start university this week, say they will put the funds towards their further education.

Jemma, 18, of South Hiendley, said: “It was a weight off my shoulders to have a bit of help. The deposit on my accommodation is £250 so it will go towards that and first year books.”

Rebecca, 19, of Hemsworth, said: “I’ll be paying partly the deposit of my flat and I’ll be putting it also to books and hopefully a laptop.”

John Skirrow, chairman of the education fund, said this year’s grant – which usually is only awarded to one pupil – went to two worthy winners.

He said: “It doesn’t necessarily have to go on academic excellence. The girls were very enthusiastic and deserving.”
