Sale confirmed of disused supermarket
A DISUSED Hemsworth supermarket could be brought back into use following an agreement to sell the premises and adjoining petrol station to another food retailer.
The Co-op petrol station on Market Street continued to trade when its neighbouring Co-op supermarket closed last June. Now a Co-operative spokesman has confirmed both premises are in the process of being sold to an unnamed buyer, with the sale expected to complete in the summer.
He said the six members of staff employed at the petrol station had been told they would keep their jobs under the new ownership, but he would not reveal the name of the purchasing company.
He said: "We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff at the petrol filling station."
The Co-op supermarket and travel centre closed less than a year after the opening of a 24-hour Tesco, also on Market Street. Co-op bosses blamed a lack of trade for the closure.
The 41,000sq ft Tesco opened in September 2008 and was built as part of a deal which saw the company provide the town with a new bus station, library and school.
The Express approached Tesco to ask if it was the purchaser in the Co-op agreement, but the company declined to comment.
