OLYMPIC torchbearers limbered up this week in preparation to carry the flame through the Express area.

The chosen few visited youngsters at the first school on the route on Monday, ready for taking on the important task of carrying the flame on Monday, June 25.

Mick Cordall, from Hemsworth, and Charlotte Furlong, 24, of Wakefield - who works for South Kirkby’s SESKU Academy - will carry the flame through Ackworth and Pontefract.

Mr Cordall, 43, of Union Street, said: “This is a chance of a lifetime for me, like winning the lottery.

“I am absolutely buzzing because I never thought something like this would be within my reach.”

They visited Newton Hill Primary School in Wakefield, the first school on the Olympic torch route, which will finish its journey through the district at Oakfield Park School in Ackworth.

The route will be as follows:

l Wakefield (starting around 11am) - Wentworth Street, Burton Street, Bond Street, Wood Street, Bull Ring, Westmoreland Street, Teall Street, Kirkgate Precinct and Kirkgate.

l Castleford - Leeds Road (Joffre Avenue to Front Street section), Front Street and Park Road.

l Pontefract - Front Street, Jubilee Way, Mill Hill Road and Ackworth Road (Kings School).

l Ackworth - Pontefract Road and Barnsley Road.

It is due to reach Oakfield Park School around 1.15pm.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, sport and libraries, said: “This is the district’s moment to shine as people from across the world will be watching the flame as it travels through our streets.”

The full route for the district is available online at www.wakefield.gov.uk/Torch.
