HUNDREDS of people walked through the streets of Upton on Sunday to mark three years since the tragic death of Rifleman Luke Farmer.

Family, friends and dignitaries came out in force to remember Rifleman Farmer, who was killed in Afghanistan on January 15, 2009 while serving with 3rd Battalion the Rifles.

The 19-year-old former Minsthorpe Community College student died alongside Cpl Lee Brownson, 30, from County Durham, after an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near Sangin, Helmand province.

The community started their vigil from the Upton Arms, High Street, and walked united to the war memorial on Harewood Lane.

Lay preacher Arnold Senior, a member of the local methodist church, led the service at the memorial.

Luke’s father, Mark Farmer, mother Angie, and other family members attended the event.

Mr Farmer said he was grateful for the support of the community.

He said: “There was a good turn out again.

“I wouldn’t have expected it to carry on as long as it has but I am really thankful for the support from people over the last three years.”

After the service there was a gathering at Upton Rugby Club on Quarry Lane.

Chairman of Upton and North Elmsall Parish Council, Shaun Hodson, attended the parade with other members of the parish council. He said: “It was nice to see so many people come out to pay tribute to Luke.”

The parish council are planning to create a memorial garden, on Waggon Lane, in his honour, and with the help of the community, have raised £10,000 towards it.

Coun Hodson said he was trying to push things forward.

The council are still awaiting planning permission before they can start work on the land beside the youth club.
