Regeneration traffic problems are discussed
DISCUSSIONS about a 1,500 home development were held on Tuesday.
South Elmsall Town Council met with a representative from Wakefield Council’s strategic housing department on at the Social Centre on Monday to discuss plans to build 1,500 homes on Westfield Lane, South Elmsall
Councillors were concerned that traffic may become a problem at the bottom of Westfield Lane during the construction of the houses, and that additional traffic would be created once families move in.
Councillors asked for assurances from the council officer that necessary measures would be taken to alleviate the problem.
They feared that traffic already ‘bottlenecked’ at the junction near Sainsburys on Barnsley Road and Westfield Lane, would be added to, creating further problems for drivers and residents in the town.
It was agreed by councillors to hold a further meeting with a representative from the highways department to discuss the issue further.
Outline planning applications for the site have already been sent to Wakefield Council. A second, more detailed plan has to be sent to the authority before February 2013.
The next meeting will take place at the Social Centre, on Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, on December 17.
The plans were part of an £8.1m wider regeneration scheme which included 160 more homes in the West End area of Hemsworth, and 170 in the City Estate in Fitzwilliam.
