Racism in football is not an issue at club
Frickley Football club speak out about racism in football after House of Commons discussion about it being a 'significant problem' -
A FOOTBALL club has dismissed a government report which said racism in football is still a ‘significant problem’ for clubs.
The report – compiled by the House of Commons Committee – was in response to the nationally publicised cases involving Patrice Evra, Luis Suarez and John Terry.
Suarez was given an eight-match ban and £40,000 fine by the Football Association after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United player Patrice Evra last season.
But Frickley Athletic manager, Karl Rose, said the national cases were not a reflection of the local game.
He said: “Football changing rooms can be a ruthless place where boundaries are always stretched, but they know there is a line and know not to cross it.
“I’ve been a manger for three years and I have had all ethnic backgrounds and I’ve never once seen or heard racist comments. It’s something I won’t tolerate on the pitch or in the changing room.
Mr Rose, who has played professionally and semi-professionally for more than 20 years, said the issue was with those in charge for not appointing more diverse managers.
He said: “The right person should get the job regardless of their background but we are a diverse society, and I don’t think that is being reflected in football mangers across the country.”
Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett has joined the campaign to stamp out racism in football.
He said: “There is no place for racism in football or any sport. I am pleased to hear that Frickley Athletic are not subjected to this kind of behaviour and I know they would be quick to take action if anything did happen.
“That said it still continues to be an issue in larger clubs.
“I met last week with the regional officer of the Communication Workers Union who are active in the campaign “Show Racism the Red Card” and I will be working with them, other trade unions and groups in campaigning to stop racism in sport.”
In response to the government report the Football Association, Premier League and Football League made a joint statement.
It said: “We agree with the committee that whilst substantial progress has been made to promote equality and tackle discrimination in the game, challenges remain for all of the football authorities.
“We remain committed, along with all of our stakeholders, to promoting equality and diversity within the game and to the eradication of all forms of discrimination in football.”
