TEENS who found it hard to succeed in mainstream education have gained national qualifications at Sesku Community Learning and Sports Academy.

The 14-year-old Hemsworth Arts and Community College students had been given fixed-term exclusions, but completed the 12-week course and gained certificates in first aid, sports leadership and self defence.

The course was organised by the academy’s chairman Adam Redfern for the pupils after the college approached him to ask for help.

Mr Redfern said: “The young people have grown in confidence and have shown they have the ability to achieve the accreditation. The programme captured their imagination and the young people responded positively.

“It has been a huge success, the kids have been fantastic and should be proud of what they have achieved.

The course started on January 17 and the children met once a week at the academy on Langthwaite Road, South Kirkby, to tackle the subjects, and then spent the rest of the week in school.

Wendy Barker, assistant principle at the college said: “The course has been great for the pupils and we have seen a tremendous difference in their behaviour.

“Not one of them missed a session at the academy and worked really hard, and that says a lot when a group of children who have similar issues are put together in that way. They really enjoyed the course and we are hoping to hold another session in the summer term.

“We wanted to build their confidence and life skills and that has definitely happened.”
