Pupils from Kinsley Primary School have won a competition to name a street on a new eco-friendly housing development in the village.

Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) challenged the youngsters to come up with a name for the street where the new houses have been built.

Four pupils, Alex Barner, 10, Charlotte Smith, eight, Shannon Knight, eight, and Nathan Strudley, eight, had their name suggestions shortlisted.

Charlotte’s suggestion –Ings Court – was chosen as the winner as the houses have been built on the former site of a WDH independent living scheme, Ings House.

Charlotte said: “I’m really excited to see my street name on the sign. The houses are so nice.”

Other suggestions for the street’s title included Acorn Grove, Southdale Way, Olympic View and Dinosaur Road.

The four youngsters were also given an exclusive tour of the new properties.

Jane Gwilliam, tenant involvement officer at WDH, said: “We’re really pleased with the street name.

“It’s been great to get local children involved in something that will be around for a long time in the community.”

Damian Strudley, governor at Kinsley Primary School, said: “We’ve been looking at global warming in school, so it’s good for the children to come and see these eco-friendly homes.

“They’re going to grow up and know they’ve been involved in something that really benefits the community.”

The 20 new houses have solar panels hidden in the roofs and an energy display device which monitors their utility usage.

Some of the homes have extra environmentally friendly features, including owl nest boxes, bat boxes, and hedgehog homes.
