Public health services shift

STOP smoking services, obesity help and sexual health services will all become the responsibility of Wakefield Council from April.

The Government’s controversial changes to the NHS see responsibility for public health shift from the NHS to the Council. A report the council’s Cabinet meeting next week sets out the hand-over arrangements.

Coun Pat Garbutt, cabinet member for adults and health, said: “We already work hard to make a difference to health and wellbeing and this work will be strengthened in the next few months through the transfer of local public health functions from Primary Care Trusts to the Council. Public health is about preventing health problems and keeping people healthy. It also deals with how we protect the public from threats to their health from things like infection.”

Services which will be transferred include smoking cessation, alcohol and drug misuse services, public health services for children and young people, interventions to tackle obesity and public mental health, dental health and sexual health services.

Wakefield Council’s Chief Executive, Joanne Roney said: “We are working with NHS managers to make sure we have a smooth transition and are ready to take the reins on public health next year.”
