A WOMAN was assaulted by a gang of men who tried to steal her handbag.

The 21-year-old victim was walking along a ginnel off Mellwood Lane in Moorthorpe on Monday night when she was approached by three men.

They blocked her path and tried to grab her mobile phone and bag.

When she refused to let them have it one of the men hit her in the face.

But she managed to run away before she was more seriously injured.

It happened at around 10.25pm in the ginnel which leads to a field at the back of Cambridge Street.

Detectives have appealed for help in tracking down the three suspects who were all described as white Eastern Europeans.

DI Paul Harrison of Wakefield CID, said: “We are appealing for information about this incident and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or saw three men, fitting these descriptions behaving suspiciously in the area shortly beforehand to contact us.

“These sort of offences are very rare in South Elmsall and I’d like to appeal to members of the Polish community there in particular to contact us if they know the men responsible.

“Residents should also of course always be wary of their surroundings when using devices such as phones, particularly when in secluded areas.”

All three suspects were aged in their early 20s.

Detectives said one suspect was of slim build with big eyes, a pale complexion and short, shaved, bleached blonde hair.

He was wearing a navy blue RockPort branded jumper and jeans.

The second suspect had short, dark hair which was flicked up at the front.

He was described as skinny and was wearing dark clothing.

The third suspect had short, dark, messy hair and prominent cheek-bones.

Detectives said he was wearing Puma branded trainers.

Anyone with information about the attack or anyone who recognises the descriptions of the suspects should contact Wakefield CID on 101.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
