A SUPER surgery which will provide health services for 12,000 people will be built in South Kirkby, after Wakefield Council approved plans.

Little Lane and Stockingate surgeries will both be run in the two-storey building that will be built on Langthwaite Road. It will also provide a pharmacy, a NHS dentist and community health services.

Leader of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council, Coun Laurie Harrison, said he was delighted with the decision.

He said: “It’s a fantastic step forward for South Kirkby and Moorthorpe. It’s a facility we deserve.”

He said the variety of services, such as x-rays and scans on site will hopefully stop people having to wait to be seen at hospitals.

The community services currently provided at South Elmsall Health Centre, such as podiatry, community dentist, sexual health, speech therapy, health visiting and district nursing will also move into this new facility.

The decision was made by a council case officer on February 3.

Dr Douglas Diggle, of Little Lane Surgery, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this news. Once it is built it will provide a great opportunity for all our patients to benefit from a new surgery in an absolutely delightful building.”

Dr Joseph Chandy, senior partner of Stockingate Surgery, added: “This is a very exciting time for the practice and we would like to say thank you to all our patients who have supported us through this process.

“Once the new surgery is open we are certain that this will make a significant impact on the wellbeing of our community.”

Jonathan Molyneux, interim executive director of finance and efficiency for NHS Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield District cluster, said: “This is excellent news for the future of primary care services in the area and we’re grateful to all the local people who have contributed to the development of these plans. “
