An elderly man who tripped over a pothole outside his house is calling on the council to get the road resurfaced.

Geoffrey Scott, 75, says he slipped down the three-foot wide pothole on Vicarage Lane, South Kirkby, last month.

He claims the road is a danger to pedestrians and Wakefield Council needs to take action.

He said: “I grazed my arm and leg in the fall and broke my glasses, so I put in a claim to the council for £170.

“I received a letter from the council saying the road is not a danger to pedestrians and therefore they will not pay my claim.

“I’m not bothered about the claim. The road needs redoing and not just potholes filling in. It’s absolutely terrible.

“When you get to my age, it shakes you up if you have a fall.

“If the council doesn’t take action then this could easily happen again.”

Graham West, Wakefield Council’s highways network manager said: “We have been out to check the condition of the road and none of the potholes were at a depth that would warrant emergency repair.

“As part of our annual resurfacing programme, we will assess the road to see if it needs including in next year’s plan.”
