THE OLYMPICS may have finished more than a month ago but the spirit of the Games was still alive and well in South Elmsall.

ET Martial Arts Academy of the Seven Golden Dragons held its own Olympic Games last Saturday with no fewer than 72 events.

And more than 40 students aged from five up to 60-years-old took part in events which included running, swimming and karate.

Eamon Timmons, head of the academy, said: “It was a fantastic day. We really went to town with the Olympics theme and everyone really enjoyed it.

“The village has never done anything like it so I took the challenge on.

“As a country we hosted the Olympics and that’s history to us all because we won’t see it again.

“I said to everyone who took part that they will remember the fact that we held the Games forever.”

The academy decked out in bunting and union flags for the event.

Even Mr Timmons’ car was decorated with flags on his wing-mirrors and the Olympic rings on his car bonnet and doors.

He said: “We gave everyone a t-shirt and a certificate so they will be able to remember that we hosted the Olympics in our country and that they took part in a momentous event in South Elmsall.

“It was just a great day. We couldn’t have asked for any better.”

Mr Timmons thanked nearby residents and the community who he said were very supportive of the event
