Officers hurt after their patrol car was rammed in Hemsworth
Latest news...
AN alleged drink driver rammed into a police car and injured two officers during the early hours of New Years Day.
The officers spotted a Citroen Berlingo van being driven erratically on Pontefract Road, Hemsworth at about 1.25am yesterday (Tuesday).
They tried to stop the van but it sped off.
Officers claim the van then stopped and was reversed into their patrol car before the Berlingo sped off again.
The van was found abandoned on Conisborough Way, in Hemsworth.
After a chase the two injured officers arrested a 20-year-old man from South Elmsall on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, drink driving and failing to stop for police.
He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Inspector Geoff Carter, of the South East neighbourhood policing team, said: “As always New Years Eve into New Years Day was an extremely busy day for the police and all of the emergency services.
“This is an example of what police officers come across on their everyday duties and personally I would just like to thank the officers and staff who worked that busy period for their hard work towards keeping the communities of the south east safe.”
Anyone who saw the van in the area or witnessed the incident should contact the NPT on 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
