New clock for town market
The countdown is finally over as the Mayor of South Elmsall Town Council finally unveils the brand new iconic market clock.
Coun Richard Askew said he was delighted to have a clock back after 18 months without a timepiece as the former was branded irrepairable.
The new 10,000 clock was placed at the market entrance on Barnsley Road, South Elmsall, last Thursday.
Coun Askew said: "Historically it's a marker of the town and it has been greatly missed, people have kept asking where it is and when it will be replaced.
"So I am delighted to see a new clock back here."
"People use it as a meeting place and gives the village its identity so it really is fantastic for the area."
The new Big Ben style clock features Roman numerals in contrast to the former clock's standard numbers.
Local historian and South Elmsall town councillor Bob Hayhurst said he was pleased to have the clock back as it was given to the council by the rotary club in the 1950s and has been at the market entrance ever since.
He said: "It's part of our history and we should keep things like that because once it's gone, it's gone forever."
South Elmsall Town Council and Wakefield Council jointly funded the timepiece.
The former clock will be made an ornamental piece in South Elmsall's social centre, Westfield Lane.
