A scheme to give carers a helping hand has been launched in South Kirkby.

The new day centre, based at Burntwood Community Centre, Church Top, will give respite to those looking after family members with health issues.

There are lots of activities on offer for those attending the centre, including games, exercises and quizzes.

The centre has already helped a South Elmsall family.

Jayne Womack’s dad has vascular dementia and her mum is his main carer. She said: “My mum is of poor health herself, but still needs and wants to go out with friends, have ‘me’ time.

“Finding this service has allowed my mum to recharge her batteries and it’s a change of scenery for my father. It gets him out meeting people and experiencing different things, and gives my mum strength to cope with her personal situation a bit better.”

Rose Whittaker, who helped set up the voluntary scheme, said it was vital for carers to have time to themselves.

There are six trained volunteers who are qualified and experienced to care for those with mental health problems and dementia.

The scheme runs from 8am until 7pm every day and costs from £28.

There is also a free Sunday session which takes place from 8am until 11am.

Contact Mrs Whittaker on 07957 998 664 for more information.
