The longest serving councillor in the district who has dedicated almost 40 years to helping the community is set to become deputy mayor of Wakefield.
District and town councillor Laurie Harrison will be officially put forward for the prestigious role at the council’s annual mayor-making ceremony in the council chamber at County Hall in May. He would then take on the position thereafter.
Coun Harrison, who was elected to the district council in 1974, said: “This promises to be an exciting year ahead and I’m looking forward to again meeting many different people across the district during this time. I’m sure it will be an experience I will never forget.”
Coun Harrison is leader of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council and district councillor for South Elmsall and South Kirkby.
Leader of Wakefield Council Peter Box was confident Coun Harrison would make an excellent deputy mayor.
