SCHOOL children, students and historians have all clubbed together for the launch of a new history project.

And they need your historical photographs of the area.

Hemsworth Arts and Community College has launched My Place, My Space, My Future, which is a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It will use photos of the past and compare them with new photos of the present.

They will then be compared by local historians and schools and uploaded onto a dedicated local history website.

Stephen Foster, assistant principal at Hemsworth Arts and Community College, submitted the bid to get the funding.

He said: “The local area has a rich and diverse history but this project seeks to link the past with the now and give community members the opportunity to talk about the future of the local communities.

“People who take part will be able to develop knowledge of the local history and contribute through photos and oral histories to the local history of the area.”

For the first stage of the project residents are invited to share their photos of the 20th century.

Any photographs of Hemsworth, Ackworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam, Havercroft and Ryhill from the 20th century are welcome.

And then in the next phase of the project, photographs taken of the same building or from the same location will be taken.

They will then be compared in January and February before the launch of the new local history website by June of next year.

The website will feature audio clips and descriptions of the photographs and can be added to by residents.

It is expected to go live, displaying the photographs, along with audio of people comparing them, in June next year.

And organisers hope that the site will be added to once online and will be used by schools and community groups in the future.
