New club to fight shock rise in young jobless

A CLUB which hopes to turn the tide of shocking youth unemployment figures has been launched.

Sesku Academy’s job club, which began on Friday, will offer people a service outside of the Job Centre. It is hoping to give people support in getting back into work - in particular young people - after the Express revealed last week that a massive 41.9 per cent of all Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) claimants in Hemsworth are aged under 24.

The club will offer CV and interview training and courses such as first aid, health and safety, security and fire safety, to help people bump up applications.

But it will also give people the chance to socialise using their entertainment facilities, including computers and a pool table, during breaks from the job hunting work.

Volunteer tutor Ryan Redfern said: “We’ve set up a job club that’s a bit different from the norm.

“People can often be intimidated by the Job Centre - we want to see people that want to work but may not have the confidence or knowledge to go about it.

“We can help them with that, and we want to get them socialising as well. We want to get people out of the house and ultimately back in to work - it’s about confidence building.”

The volunteers at the job club have been working with local businesses to find out where people fall down in their applications.

And they will be staging mock interviews based on this feedback, after finding that the wrong interview technique can often lead to the strongest of candidates being dismissed.

They will offer extra training for qualifications based on both suggestions from businesses, and unemployed people that come to the club

Mr Redfern added: “We’ve made strong links with local businesses who know they can trust our word.

“We’ll work with people to build up their applications and then we can refer them on - we’ll help people with their bus fares for getting to interviews.”

The job club will run every Friday at Sesku Academy’s base in Burntwood School, on Church Mount, South Kirkby, from 10am until 1pm. It is open to anybody who is keen to get back into work.
