Council bosses have launched a new campaign to crackdown on dog fouling across the district.
The problem was highlighted in Hemsworth this week as council enforcement officers and police joined forces to patrol the streets to clampdown on pet owners who don’t clean up after their animals.
Anyone caught leaving their dog’s waste on the ground can be issued an on the spot £50 fine by council officers or the police .
Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for environment and communities, said: “We are committed to cleaning up our environment but need pet owners’ help to do so.
“Not everyone realises that bags of dog waste can be put in any litter bin, so there is no excuse, clean up after your dog - bag it and bin it.”
The campaign kicks off a series off road shows Wakefield Council is holding across the district over the next year to encourage people to clean up after their dogs.
Coun Cummings said: “If you witness someone not picking up after their dog, please report them to our contact centre, giving a description of both the owner and the dog.
“We must show these persistent offenders that we will not tolerate this irresponsible behaviour.”
