Mum's £620 thank you!
A HEMSWORTH mum has helped to raise hundreds of pounds for a children's ward she says helped save her son's life.
Theresa Barber, of Old Mill Close, raised 620 for Hydes Ward at Pontefract General Infirmary with a family fun day at Sacred Heart Church, Market Street, in Hemsworth.
The ward supported her nine-month-old son, Luke, who has heart and lung problems and underwent open heart surgery at three weeks old.
Luke was born with part of his intestines in the umbilical cord, which resulted in a coarctation of the aorta, where the artery that carries blood away from the heart is narrowed.
He has a hole at the bottom of his heart, which is slowly closing by itself, and has suffered a collapsed lung.
He has also had four other operations and is still a regular patient at the ward as he has to be on oxygen until his lungs develop and is also prone to infections.
The family fun day on Saturday, June 21, had stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle, Indian head massage, a jumble sale and a name the bear game.
The money raised has bought toys for Hydes Ward and the fun day also raised 73 for The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund in Leeds.
Theresa, 26, said: “It was a wet day but the money we raised exceeded my expectations. I was hoping for 500 but we did really well and I want to thank everyone who helped on the day.
“There was even a burger van which donated its profits and people were dressed up in costumes with collection boxes.
“We went to the hospital with two trolley-loads of toys and the nurses were shocked that we had so many. There was even enough left over to give to the outpatients’ ward.
“Luke has already had five operations – his second home is the hospital. I chose to do the fundraising because the ward has been very helpful.”
Gillian Squires, hospital play specialist, said: “Theresa brought in a mixture of developmental toys, activity centres, mobiles, toys and cradle chairs. We want to say a huge thank you to her for all the time and effort she put in.
“The children will benefit from this every day and it will help parents because it keeps the children very well entertained.”
