Mum’s anger at A&E ‘neglect’ of daughter
THE MOTHER of a little girl who turned away by doctors at Pontefract A&E but later admitted to Barnsley Hospital has spoken of her outrage at the treatment she received.
Four-year-old Chardonnay Giles had been sick with a stomach bug for three days when concerned mum Sarah Hollinworth, of Brookside, Hemsworth, decided to take her daughter to hospital.
Miss Hollinworth, 29, took her to Pontefract Hospital A&E department on March 21 and claims doctors did not give her a thorough examination.
She said: “The doctor just told me she was dehydrated and there was nothing they could do. I said I wanted a second opinion and would take her to Pinderfields Hospital but she said they would say the same thing.
“I knew she was dehydrated, but my concern was that she could not keep anything in her tummy.
“I knew something was really wrong. I just sat crying and begging them to help her but they gave me no advice or diagnosis so I just had to go home.”
Miss Hollinworth decided to get another opinion so took her daughter to Barnsley Hospital A&E department where she was put on a ward where blood tests and urine samples were taken.
She was diagnosed with gastroenteritis – an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract involving both the stomach and small intestine resulting in diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
Miss Hollinworth said: “I am appalled that a little girl would be neglected like this. It was dangerous. If I had not taken her to Barnsley A&E who knows what could have happened.
“I couldn’t believe they would not help, hospitals are there to help people who are poorly.”
Chardonnay is now fully recovered but Miss Hollinworth has made a complaint to the hospital trust.
Tracey McErlain-Burns, chief nurse and director of patient experience at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am sorry to hear that we did not meet Miss Hollinworth’s expectations.
“If Miss Hollinworth would like to discuss this with us, I would encourage her to make contact via our patient advice and liaison service on 01924 543688.”
