Missing boys spark sewer rescue bid

FIREFIGHTERS launched a dramatic rescue bid after reports that two boys were trapped in a Hemsworth sewer.

Crews descended on Belmont Crescent after a resident told police two youths had failed to emerge after entering a sewer system on the street at around 6.45pm last night.

Firefighters with specialist equipment carried out a full search of the sewer, but the boys were found "safe and well" at another address just under three hours later.

Station commander Chris Kirby, incident commander, said: "We carried out top searches of the manholes on Belmont Crescent and either side and committed technical rescue crews with confined space equipment to search for the two reported casualties.

"We were subsequently made aware that the two individuals within the sewer system were safe and well, unaware of the rescue operation that was underway."

Firefighters from South Elmsall, Pontefract, Rothwell, Brighouse, Leeds, Rawdon and Wakefield attended the incident with the hazmat unit from Ossett and the technical rescue vehicle from Cleckheaton.
