THE OLYMPICS made a splash in more ways than one for a swimming team which has seen more children taking to the water than ever before.

The Minsthorpe Marlins have had a huge increase in the number of youngsters coming along to the club since the summer.

And for the first time ever the club has a full boys’ squad.

Dave Drabble, assistant coach at the club, said: “It’s such a big change since the Olympics, with at least 30 per cent more people coming along. I think it’s absolutely fantastic.”

The club, which trains at Minsthorpe Swimming Pool, in South Elmsall, caters from youngsters aged from just five-years-old right up to adults in their 50s.

In recent years the boys relay team only had seven swimmers.

But thanks to the wave of newcomers, it now has the 16 members needed to be able to compete.

Mr Drabble said: “The Paralympic Games has also had a massive effect on kids, as they see these amazing athletes and then think if they can do it, so can I.”

If the club sees potential in any of the swimmers they are trained up and then can progress onto the Doncaster Dartes club.

Mr Drabble, who has been with the club for four years, said the only reason he was involved was to get more people into the sport.

He said: “I would love it even more came along.”

The club is run with the help of volunteers and Mr Drabble said more people willing to donate their time were always welcome.

The Marlins train at the pool on Ash Grove, on Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Saturday mornings.
