Midnight walk for charity

WOMEN from across the Express area have taken part in a midnight walk in aid of a local charity.

The Starlight Walk has raised more than 21,000 for the Prince of Wales Hospice, which provides specialist, palliative care for people with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.

The women only walk - which was a circular route of either 6.5 or 10-miles, starting and finishing at Junction 32 Outlet Shopping Village in Castleford - was joined by more than 430 women.

Susan Hartshorne, from South Kirkby, collected an amazing 1,185 while Angie Spencer, from Upton, and her colleague, Heather Tordoff-Scott, from Asda's Normanton-based distribution centre, took part in the 10-mile route, raising 700 between them.

Mrs Hartshorne said: "I just grabbed everyone I know and asked them to sponsor me. My mother-in-law, Ethel Hartshorne, was cared for by the hospice and I have a friend who is currently receiving treatment for cancer. The hospice is a very good cause and I know how much they rely on people to fundraise in order to keep going."

Ms Spencer, who lost both her parents and her sister to cancer, said: "Everybody does a fantastic job at the hospice and for the Starlight Walk to take place every year is brilliant. Everybody enjoys it and it's nice to be able to support a good cause with lots of other like-minded people."

The event was sponsored by SSE, Ferrybridge Power Station.

Mandy Metcalfe, senior fundraiser, said: "We are delighted that our walkers have raised this fantastic amount of money through sponsorship of their midnight challenge. However, we also know that there is a lot more money yet to come. On the night, we asked walkers to tell us the amount of sponsorship that they had been promised and this added up to an amazing 36,000.

"I would now urge everyone who has still to collect their money to do so as soon as possible and let the hospice have the outstanding 15,000. This money really is vital to the hospice."
