Man suffered broken wrist after row

A GOOD Samaritan who tried to break up an argument near his home had his wrist broken, a court heard.

Thomas McNeilly was at his home on Moorfield Crescent, Hemsworth, when he heard shouting outside, Pontefract Magistrates’ Court heard on Monday. He went outside to help when an altercation took place, prosecutors claim.

Luke Croft, 21, of Brettegate, Hemsworth, is charged with maliciously wounding the victim on February 18.

Andy Wills, prosecuting, told the court: “There was an unknown female outside his house and she appeared to be being assaulted.

“He says that a male was grabbing hold of the female by her throat and he could hear her screaming,”

Mr McNeilly went outside to see if the woman was alright and was sworn at by Croft who told him to mind his own business.

It is alleged that Croft then struck Mr McNeilly with no warning.

Mr Wills said Mr McNeilly had no recollection of which arm Croft used and the next thing he remembered was getting up from the floor with a pain in his arm and seeing his two sons restraining Croft against a fence.

Mr Wills said: “He made his way back into his house and could still hear the male shouting abuse at him and his sons. He told them that they would be dead and that he would burn down his house.”

Mr McNeilly suffered a broken wrist from the incident, which had to be reset and caused him to be out of work.

Croft is charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

He gave no indication of a plea.

Magistrate Mary Clifford said: “This does not fall into magistrates court and should go to crown court.”

Croft was given conditional bail until his next hearing on September 24.
