Man ditches beer and kebabs for charity
Lager lover Simon Winter enjoyed nothing more than a pint at the pub followed by a kebab, but has decided to give up takeaways and alcohol for a year to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
The 36-year-old from South Elmsall is hoping to raise £200 for Bowel & Cancer Reasearch after two of his relatives have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
He will be trading his usual pint and kebab for cups of tea and home cooked low-fat dinners.
Mr Winter, of Doncaster Road, said: “It started as a bet in the pub at the Minsthorpe Hotel. We were in a room full of people and someone said I couldn’t go without a drink for a year. I said I’d go one better and give up takeaways, and I’d raise money for charity as well.
He added: “It seemed like a good way of supporting a good cause,”
Deborah Gilbert, chief executive of Bowel & Cancer Research, said: “Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, claiming a life every 30 minutes. If we are to help change that, the support of people like Simon is vital.”
