MAYOR of Wakefield Elaine Blezard had better watch out - she’s got competition.
Six-year-old Macy Hopkins got the chance to try on a mini mayoral robe and chains when Wakefield’s mayor came to Common Road Infant School on Thursday.
And along with her school friends, she was thrilled to find out more about the district’s civic traditions.
Before the visit, each child was asked to find out as much as they could about the mayor and her role, but they still had lots of questions to ask on the day.
Headtacher Deborah Batty said: “When we got a call from the mayor’s office offering a visit we thought it would be great, because we feel that these first hand experiences for children are really important.
“While in school, the mayor held an assembly with the mace bearer and visited every classroom from the nursery up. They were asked all sorts of questions by the children, from those about her robe and chain to what she did - they were fascinated.”
The children also learnt about the mayor’s chosen charity, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which they were already familiar with after learning how the helicopter once landed on school field when attending to an emergency.
Mrs Batty said: “The children were already intrigued by the Air Ambulance and now want to do some fundraising for the charity.”
