Kids learn how to play safe around works

PUPILS swapped history lessons for hard hats as they learnt all about playing safely.

The youngsters from Kinsley Primary School, Fitzwilliam, were paid a visit by gas engineers to remind children across the district to play safe and stay safe around excavations and road-works.

The message came from Northern Gas Networks as they carry out a project to upgrade more than a kilometre of old cast iron gas mains close to the school.

Headteacher Paul Birdsall, said: “Explaining the possible dangers around the work which will be undertaken in the area is very important for the safety of our children and the community as a whole.”

They taught them basic safety tips, showed them examples of barriers and equipment, and explained why the work was needed.

The gas connection project, now underway, will see engineers working over the summer holidays to install new, durable plastic pipes in place of the old metal ones on Common Road, Briar Bank, Beech Grove, and Tombridge Crescent.

The work is part of a major multi-million pound programme to upgrade the region’s gas network.
