AN UNLIKELY community pairing has joined forces to help underprivileged football-mad children.

A.N. Abraham Funeral Directors in South Elmsall are on a mission to collect as many pairs of used football boots as possible to send to children in Ghana, West Africa.

And they have enlisted the help of school pupils at Ash Grove J&I School to give them a helping hand by donating used boots.

The company started the project after area manager Mervyn Moys, visited remote villages in the Central Region of Ghana to conduct a funeral in March and met children who were passionate about football.

Mr Moys - a keen football fan - noticed the children did not have football boots and were playing on rough ground in their bare feet.

So he decided to start up the campaign and all boots and sports clothing donated, will be sent to Africa.

Brett Benton, funeral director at the shop on Exchange Street, said: “Most families in England have football boots that their children have outgrown just sitting around at the bottom of wardrobes.

“The children in Africa just do not have any money to buy boots and receiving used boots from England would make them so happy.”

The campaign has been launched across the country.

To donate boots, or any sports clothing, visit A.N. Abraham Funeral Directors at 10b Exchange Street, South Elmsall. Or call 01977 641315 and a pick up can be arranged.
