IT was the decade when the Queen had just taken up the throne, Elvis was All Shook Up and food rationing was coming to an end.

And last week school children in Hemsworth got to grips with the 1950s themselves while celebrating their school’s Diamond Jubilee.

Pupils and staff at St Helen’s Church of England J&I School donned fancy dress and took part in activities from the decade.

All computers in the school were turned off and there were many famous faces from the decade including three Elvis’.

Headteacher Sue Henderson said: “We had an absolutely wonderful day and it went really well.

“The kids said it’s been really good and that they have really enjoyed it.”

The event was the first of the school’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the pupils will learn about a different decade each half term.

Children walked to school, teachers reverted back to 1950s teaching styles and even lunch was based on the decade.

Mrs Henderson said: “It’s really important for the children to understand what it was like back then.”

“We looked at what cars, toys and televisions were like back then and that computers or mobile phones didn’t exist.

“The expressions on the faces when we told them what it used to be like was beyond belief. They couldn’t believe it.”
