AN ENERGETIC father is tackling a variety of sporting events to help raise awareness of and money for Down’s Syndrome.

Keith Mayne, of Minsthorpe Vale, South Elmsall, is taking part in a Wild Warrior challenge - a 10k assault course - and is also running the Virgin London Marathon.

Mr Mayne, 37, decided to take on the events to make people aware of Down’s Syndrome after his 14-month-old daughter, Amelia, was born with the syndrome.

“We have been blessed and Amelia is doing amazingly well. If at any point in the challenges I find myself struggling I just have to think of Amelia and draw strength from her and how brave she has been.

The Wild Warrior event takes place on March 17 - and helping him along the way are 15 of his family and friends.

Amelia’s godfather, Mark Rowan, of Hake Park, South Kirkby, is one of them.

Mr Mayne said: “It’s brought a large community together which is really touching. It’s not as much about the money but wanting to raise awareness about Down’s syndrome.

“A lot of people don’t understand how difficult it is and by raising awareness I hope it will be different in the future.”

He has also organised a race night on February 28, at the Brookside pub, South Elmsall.

Money will be donated to the Down’s Syndrome Association and Wakefield and District’s Down’s Syndrome support group.

Wild Warrior takes place at Wild Park in Brailsford, Derbyshire. It involves a number of challenges including wading through a swamp, gliding down water slides, walking over tightropes, crawling through tunnels and clambering over cargo nets.
