Hundreds of mourners attend Luke Farmer's funeral - and thousands take part in a minute's silence

12.15pm - HUNDREDS of mourners have paid their last respects to Upton Rifleman Luke Farmer.

Wakefield Cathedral was packed out this morning (Friday) with the friends, family and Army work colleagues of 19-year-old Luke, who was killed in Afghanistan last month.

Civic dignitaries - including the Mayor of Wakefield, Heather Hudson, and Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe - did readings while tributes from Luke's fellow soldiers were read out on their behalf.

Thousands of people across the district also fell silent at noon as part of an Express campaign in Luke's honour.

The majority of schools in the area, town and parish councils and office staff - including those at the Express - all took part.

11.10am - DON'T forget to honour Luke's memory by holding a minute's silence at noon today.

It will coincide with the start of a family service for Luke.

Join thousands of people across the Express area who will fall silent including schools, councillors, Wakefield Council and Wakefield and District Housing staff, NHS employees, Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett and his team and the Express staff.

9.30am - HUNDREDS of people have lined the streets of Upton to honour local soldier Luke Farmer on the day of his funeral (Friday).

Rifleman Luke Farmer, 19, of Third Avenue, died in an explosion near Sangin in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on January 15.

Clapping could be heard as a funeral procession, which was escorted by police, passed the Upton War Memorial on Harewood Lane on its way to Wakefield.

Luke's funeral will be held at Wakefield Cathedral at 10am.
