House build first for WDH

nEW homes have been built in South Hiendley as part of a project with Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) to build properties entirely with its own workforce.

The four houses were the first to be built by WDH’s own Technical Services Team of joiners, plumbers, electricians and other tradesmen.

A total of 27 WDH employees, including six apprentices, worked to build the four semi-detached, three-bedroom houses on Wood Street.

They include fully-fitted kitchens, bathrooms and rear gardens with disabled access doors.

They have also been built to be easily adaptable for any disability needs that may arise throughout a tenant’s life, such as stairlift compatible staircases.

Solar panels and loft and cavity wall insulation have also been installed to help tenants save money on their heating bills.

Kevin Dodd, chief executive at WDH, said: “We are committed to providing affordable homes across the district, and we are extremely proud to be one of very few housing associations which can build its own properties.”

Colin Stringfellow and Charlotte Bartrop became the first tenants last week with their two children, after applying for the house on Homesearch, WDH’s choice based lettings scheme.

Mr Stringfellow said: “We are over the moon to get this property and as soon as we knew we had been successful we couldn’t wait to get in. Everything looks really great and it’s going to be a lovely home for our children to grow up in.”

The new build project is now set to build more new homes in the district, with the next set on Westfield Crescent in Ryhill.
