PLANS to build more than 1,500 homes on a former Frickley Colliery site will get underway next summer after developers were chosen for the first phase.

Keepmoat Homes has been chosen to kickstart a housing scheme on land off Westfield Lane, which is owned by the Homes and Community Agency (HCA).

Keepmoat, HCA and Wakefield Council will work together on a planning application for 190 homes, expected to be submitted in the spring.

And it is hoped construction on the site, which was previously used for pit offices, will begin next summer.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “This is one of a number of sites progressing positively within the masterplan area to transform the local environment.

“Not only will this development encourage people to move to the area and improve local links but by building energy efficient homes, we can help to prevent fuel poverty.”

The development is part of the Westfield Lane masterplan, which includes more than 1,500 homes to be built over the next ten years.

And this first phase also promises to improve pedestrian and cycling links to Frickely Country Park.

Chris Kwasniewski, area manager at the Homes and Communities Agency said: “The HCA is pleased to have worked with the council and Keepmoat to create a high quality family housing site in South Elmsall.

“The development of the site forms the final part of the restoration of the former Frickley Colliery site.

“The majority of this site has been a Country Park since the summer of 2009 and is a major asset for the local community, the residents of the new homes will be able to share in these facilities.”
