Help save treasure trove for district

Ackworth Hoard

Ackworth Hoard

A ROMANTIC gift and a treasure trove of golden coins found in an Ackworth garden could be displayed in Pontefract Museum if enough cash can be raised.

Wakefield Council has appealed to the public to help raise £55,000 to buy The Ackworth Hoard for future display in the district.

It expects to secure £49,000 and hopes to raise the remainder from residents.

The impression haul was found buried in a garden last year inside a pot made in Wrenthorpe, Wakefield.

It is made up of gold and silver coins and a single gold ring inscribed with the words ‘When this you see, remember me’.

It dates from the Civil War and was probably buried between 1645 and 1646, around the same time as the second siege of Pontefract Castle.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture said: “These items are a real part of this district’s rich history. We need to do all we can to try and keep the treasure in the district for future generations to enjoy.

“Every donation however big or small will help save the items for Yorkshire.”

To make a donation in person a donation envelope can be collected from at Pontefract Museum, Pontefract Castle, Sandal Castle, Wakefield Tourist Information Centre or any Wakefield district library from October 22.

Or to make a donation by post a cheque made should be sent and made payable to Wakefield Council, The Ackworth Hoard, Pontefract Museum, 5 Salter Row, Pontefract, WF8 1BA.

If more money is raised than needed the surplus will be used to help pay for its conservation and display at Pontefract Museum. If enough isn’t raised to acquire the Hoard, donations will be used for the development and care of the collections at Pontefract Museum.
