Hear inspirational Oxfam volunteer talk
Jodie with Esther and one of the twins. This February, Oxfam supporter Jodie Sandford travelled with us to Zimbabwe. She visited Oxfam projects, meeting the people youve supported, asking the questions you'd ask and seeing the difference it all makes. On her trip, Jodie saw how Oxfam and its partners in Zimbabwe are fighting the typhoid outbreak that has hit the country for a second year running.
A SOUTH HIENDLEY mum-of-two who traded home comforts for a trip to a Zimbabwean aid project is giving a talk on her experiences.
Jodie Sandford, of Wood Street, won an Oxfam competition to see where her regular monthly donations were going as part of the charity’s See For Yourself project.
Mrs Sandford, who has been donating to the charity for eight years, is hoping she can inspire other people to donate.
She said: “The talk is to try and raise awareness and maybe try and set up a local Oxfam supporters group because there isn’t one in this area.
“I am hoping the talk will also show people what Oxfam do with the donations they get.”
Mrs Sandford, who visited the third world country for 11 days back in February, saw a water project aimed at providing the community in the Gutu District with sustainable resources.
And she saw first hand the effects of the country’s food shortages, drought and huge levels of unemployment,
She said: “I think it makes you appreciate what you have got a lot more.
“I do try and think to myself when something goes wrong, it’s nowhere near as bad as Zimbabwe.”
Her whole experience was filmed and Mrs Sandford now features on television adverts for the charity.
The talk takes place on Wednesday, September 19, from 7pm to 8.30pm at Lakeside Methodist Centre, Newmillerdam.
