BIRTHDAY celebrations took place for a group to mark 30 years of support in the community.

The South Elmsall Stroke group, which meets every Monday at the Social Centre on Westfield Lane, helps those who have suffered a stroke, but also helps people with heart or breathing problems.

Current organiser Lesley Goodale, took over the group 15 years ago.

She had been a member of the group since her husband Keith suffered a stroke but decided to take it over when its founder, Jean McCusker retired.

Mrs Goodale said when Mrs McCusker retired Jack Meggison took charge for a short time before she decided to take the group on.

She said: “Keith loved it and so do all the other members. They look forward to it. A lot of them don’t mix in the community other than coming to the group.

“It gets them talking to different people and it’s good therapy. It make them feel better about their situation.”

Around 30 people turn up to enjoy the group and occasionally go on day trips. They are heading to Eastbourne later this year.

To help the group celebrate its landmark year the South Elmsall history group donated £100.

The funds were raised through sales of the group’s many history books which are available to buy at the Social Centre on Westfield Lane. Bob Hayhurst, secretary of the group said: “We wanted to help as it’s a local group that provides a lot of support and help for the people of the community.”
