Glass mountain danger concern

A MOUNTAIN of crushed glass that is polluting the streets around a South Kirkby recycling centre has sparked health fears.
Campaigning grandfather Winston Parsons is demanding action from the owners of the Berryman Glass Recycling Centre after years of complaints.
He said he is worried for the safety of residents after netting that used to prevent the particles from blowing off the site was damaged to such an extent that the surrounding roads “glisten” from the escaped glass.
Mr Parsons, 65, of Church Avenue, said his dog got a piece of glass lodged in his paw and he no longer walks around the site, which is on Lidgate Crescent, South Kirkby Industrial Estate.
He said: “It’s terrible, the road is glistening there is so much glass on it. There used to be nets around the building to catch the glass but that is all ripped so it’s just coming through.
“It can’t be safe for little ones who are near there as it’s all in the air. That can’t be good for people breathing it in.”
The grandfather of seven first complained about the site several years ago after which it was cleaned up, but he said it had returned to the same “appalling” state once again.
Mr Parsons said: “They should be cleaning it up on a regular basis, especially as it’s so close to the new doctor’s surgery that is being built.”
Leader of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council, Coun Laurie Harrison, said the company had a duty of care to make sure the surrounding area was clear of glass.
He said: “It’s a disgrace. There is glass all over the place. It’s not right and something needs to be done.”
He has contacted Wakefield Council about the issue, which said an officer would be inspecting the area shortly and appropriate action would be taken.
Coun Harrison said: “There has been no duty of care with regard to our community. It needs addressing so it is not imposing on the quality of life of people in the area.”
The Express contacted Berryman Glass Recycling Centre, but no comment was provided.
