AN ACTIVE girl that has helped the disabled has been presented with a prestigious Scout award.

Cara Jeal, 14, was awarded with the Chief Scout’s Gold Award, the highest award a scout can get, for her efforts with the 1st Ackworth Scouts Group.

She was given the award for a number of activities she carried out, including service to the Ackworth Riding for the Disabled Group and the Prince of Wales Hospice.

The Hemsworth Arts and Community College student is the first scout in the group to receive such an award for more than five years.

Group leader Tom Peacock said: “It’s a tremendous achievement for her, especially as she has only been with us for about two years. Most scouts join us at around the age of 10 and don’t ever get this award so she has done really well.

“It’s been at least five years since anyone in our group got this award - it’s quite a achievement for the group but it’s down to her tenacity with all the work she’s put in.”

To get the award Cara had to test her stamina in adventurous activities such as climbing, rafting, canoeing and hiking.

And she also learnt how to fend for herself in camping trips with lessons on how to cook outdoors and use an axe.

She was presented with her award by Coun Richard Molloy.
